Olhos de Água has managed to retain the charm of an old fishing village despite its popularity. The name literally means 'eyes of water,' referring to the natural freshwater springs that bubble up through the sand and become visible as small circles at low tide. Local fishermen still haul their colorful boats onto the main beach, giving the area a deeply authentic feel amidst the region's modern resorts. Situated between the bustling hubs of Albufeira and Vilamoura, the town provides a significantly more relaxed environment. The coastline here features the iconic ochre-colored cliffs of the Algarve, which glow golden in the evening light. Beyond the town beach, the nearby Praia da Falésia stretches for miles with its distinctive red-sand backdrop, great for long walks. The village's narrow streets are lined with inviting restaurants serving the catch of the day. Be sure to visit a local 'marisqueira' to try grilled sardines or Cataplana (a traditional seafood stew cooked in a copper pot). Olhos de Água serves as an excellent base for boat trips to the famous Algarve sea caves, such as Benagil. The best time to visit for beachgoers is between May and September, while spring is well-suited for hiking along the clifftops. Thanks to its central location, it is only a 30-minute drive from Faro Airport.
