Mikumi National Park (Tanzania)

Weather…

Mikumi National Park is the fourth largest in the country and forms a massive ecosystem together with the Selous Game Reserve. The Mkata Floodplain is the heart of the park, strongly reminiscent of the famous Serengeti with its open grass savanna. Here, herds of zebras, wildebeests, and buffaloes can be observed, as well as the imposing eland antelopes, often grazing right next to the main road. Lions are widespread in the park and often rest on termite mounds for a better vantage point. Giraffes, elephants, and a variety of antelope species are also regularly seen. The hippo pools at the northern edge offer the opportunity to observe hippos and numerous water birds from close range. Accessibility via the highway from Dar es Salaam makes Mikumi a convenient destination for short-term travelers and weekend visitors. Gastronomy in the surrounding lodges gives typical Tanzanian dishes like Pilau or Ugali with meat. Accommodations vary from state-run bandas to private luxury bush camps. The best time for wildlife viewing is the dry season from May to October, as animals gather at the remaining water holes. During the rainy season, the park transforms into a green paradise, which may make some tracks impassable but is good for spotting migratory birds.
