Ria Formosa is a fascinating labyrinth of canals, islands, marshes, and sandbanks stretching for 60 kilometers along the eastern Algarve coast. This unique lagoon system is protected from the open Atlantic Ocean by a chain of five barrier islands and two peninsulas. The Natural Park is a haven for birdwatchers, serving as a vital stopover for migratory birds traveling between Europe and Africa. Rare species such as the purple swamphen can be found here, alongside one of the world's largest populations of seahorses. The tides constantly reshape the landscape and dictate the rhythm of the local economy, which is heavily reliant on shellfish farming and salt production. Visitors can explore the lagoon by boat or enjoy the pristine beaches of islands like Ilha da Culatra or Ilha Deserta. Ria Formosa plays a crucial role in coastal protection and the preservation of marine biodiversity in southern Portugal.
