Best season
Sapal de Castro Marim Nature Reserve is a key breeding and resting site for migratory birds, especially from March to May and August to October. In winter, many waders and ducks can be observed.
Best time of day
Early morning is the most active time for birds as they forage for food. Dusk also brings many birds back to their roosts, offering good viewing opportunities.
Etiquette
Keep a sufficient distance from bird colonies, especially during breeding season, to avoid disturbance. Entering the salt marshes outside marked paths is not allowed.
What to bring
A spotting scope or high-magnification binoculars are recommended to identify birds in the open landscape. Sunscreen and a hat are important, as there is little shade.
Getting there
The reserve is located at the mouth of the Guadiana River near the Spanish border and is easily reachable from the town of Castro Marim. There is a visitor car park and several viewing platforms along the road.
