Środa Wielkopolska is a historic town in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, located about 30 kilometres southeast of Poznań. The town has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, once serving as an important royal centre. Its name, meaning 'Wednesday of Greater Poland', derives from its traditional Wednesday markets. The heart of the town is the Old Market Square (Stary Rynek), which is surrounded by colourful townhouses and dominated by the imposing Town Hall. The most significant landmark is the Gothic Collegiate Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an impressive 15th-century brick building. Inside, it houses valuable works of art and an atmosphere of tranquillity. The town also hosts a Regional Museum documenting the history of Środa and its surroundings. The gastronomy in Greater Poland is known for dishes like 'Pyry z gzikiem' (potatoes with cottage cheese) and the famous St. Martin's Croissant ('Rogal świętomarciński'), especially around Poznań. Visitors can enjoy the local cuisine in the restaurants surrounding the market square. Getting to Środa Wielkopolska is very easy. The town lies on the main national road 11 and has a train station with regular connections to Poznań and Jarocin, making it a handy day-trip destination from Poznań. The nearest airport is Poznań-Ławica Airport (POZ), which has a wide range of domestic and international flights. A visit to Środa Wielkopolska is worthwhile year-round. However, spring and summer are the best times to experience the historic centre in full bloom and enjoy the lively outdoor cafés on the market square. Various local festivals and cultural events also take place during this period, offering a deeper insight into the traditions of the Greater Poland region. Autumn is also a lovely time to visit, with pleasant weather for exploring.
