Kórnik Castle, located southeast of Poznań, is a magnificent architectural jewel that brings the spirit of English Neo-Gothic design to the Greater Poland landscape. Originally a medieval fortress, the castle was fundamentally transformed in the 19th century by Tytus Działyński and the famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel into the English Tudor style. With its distinctive battlements, turrets, and red brick walls, it strongly resembles a quintessential British country manor. The castle achieved fame not only for its striking architecture but primarily for housing the priceless Kórnik Library, one of Poland's most important scientific collections, which preserves irreplaceable historical manuscripts. The historic estate is beautifully surrounded by a 40-hectare arboretum, the oldest and most diverse in Poland, home to over 3,000 different species of trees and shrubs from all over the world.
