Legnica is a historic city in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of Poland, boasting a heritage that spans over eight centuries. It is most famous in world history for the Battle of Legnica in 1241, where Mongol invaders defeated a coalition of Christian knights, an event that halted their westward expansion. During the 19th century, the city flourished as an industrial hub, particularly in the textile and machinery sectors, fueled by its early connection to the railway network. A unique chapter in its history occurred between 1945 and 1993, when Legnica hosted the headquarters of the Soviet Northern Group of Forces, leading to its nickname as "Little Moscow." This military presence preserved many of the city's pre-war neoclassical villas, which now form part of a prestigious residential district. Today, the city is the powerhouse of the Polish copper industry, hosting one of Europe's largest copper smelters operated by KGHM. The urban landscape features a blend of medieval fortifications and Baroque religious monuments.
