Kowary is a welcoming town in Poland's Lower Silesian Voivodeship, positioned at the scenic foothills of the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze). For centuries, the town's history was linked to iron ore mining and metallurgy, later becoming a center for carpet weaving. During the Cold War, secret uranium mining took place in the area, a history visitors can now discover on the Kowary Adits underground tourist route. One of Kowary's most popular attractions is the Miniature Park of Lower Silesian Monuments, featuring 1:25 scale models of the region's most important castles, monasteries, and palaces. The town is an excellent base for exploring the Karkonosze National Park, which has a multitude of hiking trails, ski slopes, and wide-open viewpoints. The regional cuisine is hearty and delicious, and local specialities are worth trying at the mountain shelters. Kowary is easily accessible by car and public transport from nearby Jelenia Góra or from the Czech side. The best time to visit depends on the season: summer for hiking and winter for skiing.
