The discovery of brine springs in 1861 led to the establishment of the Bad Königsdorff-Jastrzemb spa, which quickly became a fashionable destination for the European upper class. This era came to a close after World War II when vast coal deposits were discovered in the 1950s. Jastrzębie-Zdrój played a pivotal role in modern Polish history as the site of the 1980 Jastrzębie Agreement, a major victory for the Solidarity movement.
