Jastrzębie-Zdrój is a city in the Silesian Voivodeship that underwent an extraordinary transformation from a quiet spa resort into a major industrial center. The discovery of brine springs in 1861 led to the establishment of the Bad Königsdorff-Jastrzemb spa, which quickly became a fashionable destination for the European upper class. This era came to a close after World War II when vast coal deposits were discovered in the 1950s. The subsequent decades saw the construction of numerous coal mines, triggering a population boom and leading to city rights in 1963. Jastrzębie-Zdrój played a pivotal role in modern Polish history as the site of the 1980 Jastrzębie Agreement, a major victory for the Solidarity movement. Today, it serves as the headquarters of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa, the EU's largest producer of coking coal. Despite the heavy industrial presence, the city has preserved its historic Spa Park with distinctive Swiss-style architecture. Modern Jastrzębie-Zdrój is working on economic diversification and the environmental restoration of former mining areas.
