Jelenia Góra Valley (Poland)

Weather…

The Jelenia Góra Valley (Kotlina Jeleniogórska) is an expansive, tectonically formed depression in southwestern Poland, enclosed like a massive amphitheater by the mountain ranges of the Western Sudetes. To the south, the valley is dominated by the steeply rising, almost alpine granite wall of the Karkonosze Mountains, while to the north, the gentler Bóbr-Kaczawa Mountains form the boundary. The valley floor is characterized by fertile soils and gentle, wooded hills, and is traversed by the Bóbr river, which has incised deeply into the bedrock. This sheltered, climatically favored basin location made the region a magnet for the Prussian nobility as early as the 18th and 19th centuries. They radically transformed the landscape by creating an unprecedented network of magnificent residences, romantic landscape parks, and palaces, which is why the valley is often referred to today as the 'Valley of Palaces and Gardens'.
