Karkonosze National Park (Poland)

Weather…

The Karkonosze National Park encompasses the highest section of the Sudetes mountains in southwestern Poland, sharing an extensive border with the Czech Republic. This rugged mountain landscape, heavily sculpted by Ice Age glaciers, is famous for its striking, often bizarre granite rock formations, steeply plunging glacial cirques, and deep, frigid mountain lakes. The park safeguards a unique vertical vegetation zonation: from dense, shaded mixed forests of spruce and beech in the valleys, through dense thickets of dwarf mountain pine, up to expansive alpine tundras and raised bogs on the summit plateaus, an absolute rarity in Europe at this altitude. This extreme and isolated environment provides habitat for highly specialized, glacial relict plants such as the Sudetic saxifrage and fauna like the elusive black grouse. The massif is crowned by Śnieżka (Snowka), its most prominent peak, which dominates the landscape for miles around.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Summer (June-August) is good for alpine flowers and observing marmots. Spring brings returning songbirds and the first blooming plants.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is prime time for marmots emerging from their burrows. Late afternoon increases the chance of spotting birds of prey soaring above the slopes.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on marked trails to avoid damaging the sensitive peat bogs and subalpine meadows. Feeding marmots or other animals is strictly prohibited.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy footwear with good grip is essential for the rocky, uneven terrain. Warm clothing and a rain jacket are advisable even in summer, as weather can change rapidly.
🧭
Getting there
The park is accessible from Szklarska Poręba and Karpacz via cable car or on foot. Parking is available at the base stations of the cable cars.
🦌
What to expect
High‑altitude animals are shy, and sightings often require long waits. Unpredictable weather can hamper observation; come with flexibility and patience.
