Limpio, a city in the north of the Central Department, lies about 18 kilometres north of Asunción at the confluence of the Salado and Paraguay rivers. The settlement was founded in 1785 under the name Tapua and originally housed indigenous Mbayá families who had converted to Christianity; its present name Limpio, derived from Inmaculada Concepción or Immaculate Conception, was given in honour of its patron saint. The city has experienced rapid population growth since the 1990s and today has around 130 000 inhabitants, many having migrated from the poorer neighbourhoods of Asunción, which has led to extensive suburban expansion. Economically Limpio relies on small-scale industry, brick production, river-sand extraction and a large commuter flow toward the capital. Its landmarks are the historic parish church and the hilltop Templo Cristo Rey offering broad views of the region.
