Areguá
Areguá is a pleasant town on the shores of Lake Ypacaraí, celebrated for its well-preserved colonial architecture and lively artistic community. Its cobblestone streets are lined with artisanal shops showcasing colorful ceramic works, earning it the title of the 'City of Potters'. The peaceful atmosphere and historic buildings give Areguá a timeless quality that attracts artists and day-trippers seeking a break from the hustle of the capital. Key landmarks include the Virgen de la Candelaria Church, which sits majestically atop a hill offering sweeping views of the town and the lake. Another highlight is the Paseo de los Artesanos, where visitors can watch local potters at their wheels. For nature lovers, the unique rock formations of the 'Cerros Koi and Jaguati' are a must-see, as these hexagonal sandstone columns are geological rarities found in very few places globally. Areguá is also the strawberry capital of Paraguay. Every July, the town hosts a massive Strawberry Festival where visitors can sample everything from fresh berries to artisanal desserts. Located just 30 kilometers from Asunción, it is easily accessible by local bus. The winter months (June to August) are the good time to visit to coincide with the harvest festival and enjoy the mild, sunny weather.
