💡 Tips
- Traffic on the Ruta Mariscal Estigarribia can be intense; avoid traveling in or out during rush hours.
- Use local ride-hailing apps for safe and reasonably priced trips into central Asunción.
- Tereré is a local obsession; carrying a thermos of cold water and a guampa is a great way to bond with locals.
- The city's commercial avenues are bustling, but residential side streets lack consistent sidewalks, so walk carefully.
- Carry small denominations of Guaraníes for local buses and small shops, as change is often a problem.
🍽 Food
Enjoy this cheesy corn bread with a hot burnt mate tea at traditional bakeries (chiperías) along the main avenues.
Paraguayan barbecue is excellent; look for local parrilladas (steakhouses) buzzing with families on weekends.
Grab a massive steak sandwich from one of the popular late-night food trucks (lomiteros) in the commercial zones.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Check out small craft workshops and boutiques for well-made Paraguayan leather belts and wallets.
Buy customized thermoses and guampas (drinking horns) from street vendors or artisan shops along the Ruta.
The city has several small neighborhood squares where you can sit on a bench and share tereré in the late afternoon.
The green areas around the municipal sports complex offer a brief respite from the commercial traffic.

Fernando de la Mora was founded on February 28, 1939, as an independent municipality and was previously known as Dos Bocas because of the fork in major transport routes located here. The city is named after one of the most important founding fathers of Paraguayan independence and is now part of the Asunción metropolitan area with an extremely high population density. It is divided into two main zones, North and South, separated by the important Mariscal Estigarribia Avenue, which connects the city center with the eastern suburbs. Known as the "City of Youth," it houses numerous educational institutions and has become a major commercial hub for retail and medium-sized industries. Rapid urbanization in the second half of the 20th century transformed former grazing land into a dense network of residential areas and business streets. Despite the lack of large natural spaces, the administration prioritizes the maintenance of community plazas and the modernization of urban services for its residents.
