Mariano Roque Alonso was officially founded in 1945 and has developed into one of Paraguay's most important industrial and commercial centers due to its location bordering the capital, Asunción. The city is best known as the host of the annual International Expo of Paraguay, the country's largest trade fair for livestock, industry, and services. A key geographical feature is the Remanso Bridge, which spans the Paraguay River here, providing the most important transport link between the Eastern region and the vast Gran Chaco. The port of Puerto Fénix is one of the nation's most significant private river ports, playing a central role in the import and export of goods via water. The city was named after Mariano Roque Alonso, a consul who governed the country alongside Carlos Antonio López following the death of dictator Francia. Rapid urbanization has transformed the city into a densely populated area with modern infrastructure and numerous logistics companies.
