Røst is located at the southernmost tip of the Lofoten chain, far out in the Vestfjord. Unlike the rugged mountains of the rest of Lofoten, the main island of Røstlandet is flat, situated only a few meters above sea level. Nevertheless, to the southwest, steep bird cliffs like Trenyken and Storfjellet rise from the ocean, hosting millions of seabirds, including a quarter of Norway's puffin population. Economically, everything on Røst revolves around stockfish (Tørrfisk). In spring, almost the entire island is covered with massive wooden drying racks (Hjell), where cod is dried by the wind. A curious historical link exists with Italy: in 1432, the Venetian merchant Pietro Querini was shipwrecked here and brought news of stockfish to Southern Europe. Today, most of the production is exported to Italy, and there is even a 'Querini Park' on the island. Access is by ferry from Bodø or Moskenes, or by plane to the small island airport. Røst is a paradise for cyclists as there are no inclines, and it has unparalleled vastness and light quality. It is a place where one feels the raw power of the Norwegian Sea while experiencing the warm hospitality of a community that has lived off the sea for generations.
