Mo i Rana sits at the head of the Ranfjord, just south of the Arctic Circle, and is traditionally known as Norway's 'Ironworks City'. The town's rapid expansion followed the 1946 establishment of the state-owned Norsk Jernverk ironworks, which spurred massive industrial growth during the post-war era. In recent years, the local economy has transitioned toward technology and administration, housing the National Library of Norway and the Norwegian Brønnøysund Register Centre. Its proximity to the Svartisen glacier, Norway's second largest, and Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park makes it a primary destination for glacier hiking and outdoor exploration. A standout cultural feature is the 'Havmannen' (The Man from the Sea) sculpture, permanently installed in the fjord's waters. The surrounding area is also famous for its extensive marble cave systems, including the accessible Grønligrotta. Mo i Rana remains a vital transport hub for the Nordland region.
