Nusfjord is an architectural gem located on the island of Flakstadøya. In the 1970s, it was selected by UNESCO as one of three pilot projects in Norway for the preservation of traditional wooden architecture. The village acts as a time capsule, with its distinctive yellow and red buildings arranged around a tiny harbor basin, sheltered by towering cliffs. Unlike many other places in Lofoten, Nusfjord has maintained its integrity as a complete historical ensemble. During the high season, visitors pay a small entrance fee that contributes to the upkeep of the heritage buildings. Highlights include the old cod liver oil factory, the blacksmith shop, and the historic general store 'Landhandleriet', which has remained almost unchanged for over 100 years. The surroundings are excellent for coastal hikes or walks to Lake Nusfjordvatnet. The serenity of the fjord, tucked away from the main road, has a unique atmosphere of peace. Many of the historic fisherman's cabins have been converted into high-end accommodations that blend modern comfort with historic character. The village is reached via a narrow, winding road branching off the E10, offering spectacular views along the way.
