Dividalen National Park (Norway)

Weather…

Dividalen National Park is located in Troms county in northern Norway and is known for its original wilderness and exceptional biodiversity. Founded in 1971, the park covers 750 square kilometers and includes a diverse landscape of pine forests, birch groves, and barren alpine tundra. A special feature of the park is the occurrence of all four of Norway's large predators: bear, wolf, lynx, and wolverine share this protected habitat. The Dividalen valley is characterized by the Divielva river, which meanders through the terrain and creates fertile bank regions. The geological structure of the area features both lime-rich soils with rare flora and barren primary rock formations. For hikers, the park features challenging routes far away from civilization, with impressive views of the northern Swedish border. Sámi reindeer herding has a long tradition in this area, and traces of this cultural use can be found at various points in the park. It is a place of absolute peace and untouched nature.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The park is usually accessed via the road winding through the valley, connecting to larger regional highways. Trails begin near parking areas along the river, leading deep into the protected birch forests.
📅
Best season
Summer provides pleasant hiking conditions beneath the forest canopy, with peak greenery in July. Winter completely transforms the valley into an excellent venue for prolonged cross-country skiing adventures.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain transitions smoothly from the lush, relatively flat valley floor up towards the starker, treeless surrounding alpine mountains. Paths within the valley itself are generally clear and accessible.
🎒
What to bring
Standard hiking boots and layered clothing are sufficient for the lower forest trails. If you intend to ascend to the higher mountain plateau, robust alpine gear and strong wind protection become essential.
🅿️
Parking
There are distinct, often gravel, parking spots designated for hikers near the main trailheads along the access road. Space is generally adequate except perhaps during peak holiday weekends.
⚠️
Safety
The dense forests harbor a healthy wildlife population; maintain a respectful distance if animals are encountered. Always respect nature protection regulations specifically safeguarding the local flora.
⏱️
Time needed
A pleasant walk through the old-growth birch forests might just take a leisurely morning or afternoon. Long-distance hikers often use the valley as a thoroughfare for extensive journeys extending across the wider region.
