Kajmakcalan is the highest peak of the Nidze mountain range, standing at 2,521 meters on the border between North Macedonia and Greece. It holds profound historical weight as the site of one of the fiercest battles of the Salonica Front during World War Milan, fought in 1916. Often called the 'Gate to Freedom', the Serbian victory here was pivotal for the eventual liberation of the Balkans from the Central Powers. At the summit stands a commemorative chapel and an ossuary containing the remains of fallen soldiers, making it a major site of military pilgrimage. Geographically, the peak is part of a broad alpine plateau characterized by gentle slopes and vast meadows that host a modern ski center on the Macedonian side. The high-altitude environment supports unique flora, including rare Balkan alpine species that bloom in the late spring. Visitors today can enjoy panoramic views extending over the Pelagonia Plain and the deep blue lakes of northern Greece. Kajmakcalan serves as both a silent monument to the past and a pristine destination for year-round mountain sports and trekking.
