Mount Voras (Kaimaktsalan) (Greece)

Weather…

Mount Voras, also known as Kaimaktsalan, is situated on the border between Greece and North Macedonia and is the third-highest mountain range in Greece. Its summit reaches an elevation of 2,524 meters and features a distinctive chapel of Prophet Elias, built from spent shell casings and debris from the First World War. The mountain was the site of the brutal Battle of Kaymakchalan in 1916, which played a pivotal role on the Salonika Front. Today, Voras is best known for its premier ski center, which is home to the longest skiing season in Greece due to its high altitude. The landscape is defined by vast alpine meadows, deep gorges, and extensive forests of pine and beech. Near its southern foothills are the renowned Pozar Thermal Baths, nourished by the mountain's geothermal springs. Geologically, the massif is composed of volcanic rock and limestone, fostering a rich array of flora and fauna. Voras is a designated Natura 2000 site and remains a top destination for mountaineering and ecological tourism throughout the year.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Mount Voras is most frequently approached from the border region near North Macedonia, quite often via the well-maintained roads of the local ski center. These access routes provide direct and convenient access to the higher elevations.
📅
Best season
While summer is the absolutely good time for extensive hikes without snow, the mountain completely transforms into a hub for snow sports during winter. Therefore, winter hikes strictly require highly professional winter equipment.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
You can expect a classic high-altitude alpine environment featuring very steep ascents, predominantly rocky ground, and highly wind-exposed ridges. The path to the summit is barren in landscape but has truly wide-open panoramic views.
🎒
What to bring
Robust mountaineering boots with an excellent tread are strictly mandatory. Equally indispensable are wind and waterproof jackets, reliable sun protection suitable for high altitudes, and sufficient provisions and water for the strenuous tour.
🅿️
Parking
The expansive parking areas of the local ski center generally serve as highly practical and secure base locations for summer hikers. There is usually more than enough space available there to safely leave your vehicle for the entire day.
⚠️
Safety
The high altitude means noticeably thinner air and a remarkably high potential for very rapid weather changes. Acclimatize properly, walk at a steady pace, and always turn back immediately at the very first signs of an approaching storm.
⏱️
Time needed
Reaching the third highest summit in Greece and completing the safe descent is a highly demanding physical endeavor that definitively requires a long, exhausting full day of intense hiking and careful energy management.
