Edessa, often referred to as the "city of water," is located in Central Macedonia and is world-famous for its spectacular waterfalls. In antiquity, it was the first capital of the Kingdom of Macedon before Pella assumed that role. The most striking feature is the Karanos Waterfall, which plunges from a height of 70 meters and is surrounded by a lush green park. The current formation of these waterfalls dates back to a natural event in the 14th century, when an earthquake or flood redirected the local rivers. In the historic Varosi district, visitors can admire traditional Macedonian architecture and cobblestone streets. The city also hosts a unique Open-Air Water Museum, showcasing the industrial history of the area, including old hemp factories and water mills. Geographically, Edessa is perched on a rocky plateau at the edge of the Vermio Mountains, offering expansive views over the Macedonian plain. The surrounding area is renowned for its extensive orchards, particularly for cherry and peach production.
