The Visoki Mogila burial mounds are located in the vast Pelagonia plain near the municipality of Mogila in North Macedonia. This significant archaeological site consists of several tumuli dating primarily from the Iron Age, providing vital insights into the burial rites of the ancient populations that inhabited the region. The largest of these mounds gave its name to the settlement of Mogila itself, a word that in Slavic languages directly translates to mound or grave. Excavations in the surrounding area have unearthed numerous ceramic fragments, tools, and pieces of jewelry, confirming the continuous habitation of this fertile valley over many millennia. Today, these mounds serve as prominent landmarks in the flat agricultural landscape and are a protected part of the cultural heritage of the Bitola region. Preserving these sites is essential for understanding prehistoric migrations and complex social hierarchies in the central Balkans during the first millennium BC.
