Pehčevo Waterfalls (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Pehčevo Waterfalls are located on the upper reaches of the Bregalnica River in the Maleshevo Mountains, near the border with Bulgaria. This series of seven cascades is formed by the regional geological characteristics, with the Spikovski Waterfall being the most prominent. Situated at an altitude above 1,200 meters, the falls are surrounded by dense beech and pine forests that preserve a cool mountain climate. Access is provided via marked hiking trails that are part of an eco-tourism project focused on preserving local biodiversity. During the spring snowmelt, the waterfalls reach their maximum volume, offering a display of natural power. The region around the falls is rich in endemic plant species and serves as a habitat for rare birds of prey. Geologically, the rock formations primarily consist of crystalline schists and granite, which dictate the characteristic shape of the cascades. This site is an integral part of the ecological network in eastern Macedonia.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The waterfalls are located a short, convenient distance outside Pehčevo, easily accessible via paved local roads and short dirt tracks. The final approach always requires leaving the vehicle and walking along a maintained, scenic forest pathway.
📅
Best season
Spring is arguably the best time to visit, as the melting snow from the mountains strongly guarantees the highest, most impressive water flow. Summer provides a cool retreat under the dense forest canopy, though the water volume may drastically decrease.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The scenic trail following the river features a beautiful mix of dirt paths, wooden bridges, and some highly uneven, rocky steps. While generally well-maintained, the area immediately around the waterfalls can be quite slippery due to constant mist.
🎒
What to bring
Good quality walking shoes with non-slip, sturdy soles are absolutely essential for safely navigating the damp paths and wooden bridges. A light rain jacket can be incredibly useful to stay dry from the waterfall spray, and a camera is highly recommended.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors typically park at designated clearings or very informal spots at the start of the forest trail, exactly where the road becomes too rough. Space can be somewhat limited, so very early arrival is strongly recommended during popular spring weekends.
⚠️
Safety
The primary hazard here is constantly slipping on the wet rocks or slick wooden walkways located near the falls. Swimming in the beautiful, clear pools beneath the falls is generally strongly not recommended due to the extremely cold, fast-moving water.
⏱️
Time needed
Exploring the entire forest trail and viewing the various small waterfalls usually takes about two to three hours at a very leisurely pace. Many visitors easily combine this beautiful walk with a large picnic in the hills, extending the visit to a half-day.
