Stob Earth Pyramids (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Stob Earth Pyramids are a remarkable geological phenomenon located at the western foothills of the Rila Mountains near the village of Stob. These natural formations were created over thousands of years through the erosion of conglomerate and sandstone layers deposited during the Pliocene epoch. The pyramids reach heights of up to 12 meters and can be as thick as 40 meters at their base. Their striking coloration, ranging from bright yellow to deep reddish-brown, is a result of high iron oxide concentration in the soil. Many of the pillars are topped with flat rock slabs that act as protective caps, shielding the softer material below from rainfall. In 1964, the area was officially designated as a natural landmark, protecting approximately 7.4 hectares of these unique structures. Local folklore associates the formations with various legends, most notably a wedding procession turned to stone, adding a cultural dimension to this natural site.
