Berovo Lake (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Berovo Lake, also called Ratevo Lake, is an artificial reservoir in the Maleshevo Mountains of eastern North Macedonia. It was formed in 1970 through the construction of a 53-meter high concrete dam on the Ratevska River to supply water and manage seasonal flows. Situated at an elevation of nearly 1,000 meters, the lake is encased in dense pine and oak forests that maintain a stable mountain climate. The location serves as a primary hub for regional tourism, featuring numerous paths for trekking and mountain biking. The clear water and surrounding nature contribute to the lake being regarded as one of the cleanest highland bodies of water in the country. The reservoir covers roughly 0.52 square kilometers and reaches a depth of 25 meters near the primary barrier. It functions as a critical ecological zone for local fish populations and various mountain fauna, supporting biodiversity in the Maleshevo region.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
A well-maintained paved road connects the town of Berovo directly to the lake's main tourist settlement, making it easily accessible. The short, incredibly scenic drive climbs gently through dense, beautiful pine and oak forests.
📅
Best season
Summer is the absolute peak season, offering a highly refreshing escape from the severe valley heat thanks to the high altitude. Autumn is spectacularly beautiful for the changing colors of the oak trees, while winter provides a snowy wonderland.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
A highly popular, mostly completely flat walking path circles a large portion of the serene lake on compacted, even dirt. The wider surrounding area features numerous hiking trails that range from easy forest walks to steep, challenging climbs.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes are perfectly adequate for the main flat lakeside path, but hiking boots are better for longer trails. The mountain air is noticeably cooler here than in the valley, so bringing a warm sweater or jacket is always smart.
🅿️
Parking
There are several organized parking areas near the main hotels and restaurants right at the lake's pretty entrance. During peak summer weekends and national holidays, these lots can become very crowded, and visitors may need to park further away.
⚠️
Safety
The resort area is generally very safe, well-lit at night, and highly frequented by tourists, making it suitable for families. As with any natural forest environment, checking for ticks after your walk and staying on marked trails is good practice.
⏱️
Time needed
Many visitors choose to come for a full, relaxing weekend to fully enjoy the fresh mountain air, local cuisine, and walking trails. A day trip of three to five hours provides plenty of time to walk around the scenic lake and relax at a cafe.
