Kresna is a town in southwestern Bulgaria, situated on the banks of the Struma River and known as the gateway to the spectacular Kresna Gorge. The region is characterized by a distinct Mediterranean climate, which supports the growth of rare plant and animal species. Historically, the town is closely associated with the Kresna-Razlog Uprising of 1878, a significant rebellion against Ottoman rule following the Congress of Berlin. Today, Kresna is a hub for adventure sports, with the Struma River providing excellent conditions for rafting and kayaking through the gorge. The town is also a major transportation node along the Struma Motorway (E79), connecting Bulgaria with Greece. Nearby lies the Tisata Nature Reserve, home to one of Europe's largest stands of Greek juniper. Kresna uniquely combines heroic history with wild nature and modern tourist activity at the foot of the Pirin and Maleshevo Mountains.
