Golak is a mountain range in eastern North Macedonia, situated immediately west of the town of Delčevo. Its highest point is the Chavka peak, reaching an elevation of 1538 meters above sea level. The mountain is characterized by its varied topography and dense forest cover, predominantly consisting of beech, oak, and pine trees. Golak is a major recreational area for the region, offering numerous hiking trails, mountain biking paths, and opportunities for winter sports. The cool summer temperatures make the mountain a popular retreat from the heat of the valleys. Geologically, it belongs to the Osogovo-Maleševo massif and hosts a rich flora and fauna, including rare medicinal plants and various species of birds of prey. Several vacation settlements and a children's resort are located on the mountain, highlighting its importance for local tourism. On clear days, the expansive view from Chavka peak reaches as far as the Rila and Pirin mountains in Bulgaria.

Getting there

A scenic, winding mountain road leads from the town of Delčevo up towards the recreational areas and the forest. The road is paved but can be quite narrow in certain sections, requiring cautious driving around blind curves.

Summer is incredibly popular as the dense coniferous forests offer a cool retreat from the intense heat of the lower valleys. Winter attracts visitors for snow activities, but the approach road might strongly require winter chains.

The mountain features a mix of paved access roads and well-trodden dirt trails leading through the incredibly dense pine forests. The slopes can vary from gentle inclines suitable for families to steeper, more rugged hiking paths.

Standard hiking boots are strongly advised if you plan to explore the extensive forest trails beyond the main recreational center. Due to the higher altitude, bringing warm layers and a windproof jacket is highly recommended anytime.

There are usually designated parking areas near the main recreational facilities and clearings on the mountain. On very busy summer weekends, these spots can quickly fill up, leading visitors to park carefully along the main access roads.
