The Zrnovska River is a mountain river in eastern North Macedonia and a significant right tributary of the Bregalnica. It originates in the high altitudes of the Plačkovica Mountains and plunges over numerous small cascades and rocks towards the village of Zrnovci. The river is known for its extremely clean and oxygen-rich water, providing good conditions for brown trout. Along its course, the river has carved deep gorges into the metamorphic rocks of the massif, creating a dramatic landscape. The hydropower of the Zrnovska River is utilized by two small hydroelectric plants that make an important contribution to the local energy supply without massively disturbing the ecological balance. For the residents of Zrnovci, the river is vital as it is used for irrigating the fertile fields in the valley. In summer, the riverbanks offer natural recreation opportunities and pleasant cooling. The rich riparian vegetation hosts various rare bird species and insects, making the river a local hotspot for biodiversity.

Getting there

The river is typically very easily accessible directly from the center of the Zrnovci municipality. Various small, unpaved paths lead down from the village streets straight to the clear mountain water and the scenic riverbank areas.

Summer usually provides the most pleasant conditions for enjoying the refreshing coolness of the flowing water. Spring, however, is particularly impressive due to the strong and dramatic water flow caused by melting snow from the mountains.

The banks of this mountain river can be very rocky, slippery, and highly uneven. The environment is characterized by a mix of large boulders, pebbles, and the dense, moist riparian vegetation that is typical for mountain streams.

Comfortable walking shoes with excellent grip are highly recommended to prevent slipping on the wet stones. Those wishing to cool off in the water should definitely bring a towel and basic sun protection for their stay by the river.

Parking

Visitors can usually park their vehicles without issue in the village of Zrnovci and walk the short distance to the riverbanks. Parking spots directly along the riverbed are extremely limited and often only accessible to local residents.

Safety

The stones near the water are often extremely slippery and covered in moss. The mountain water remains very cold even in mid-summer, so caution is advised when wading to avoid sudden muscle cramps or unexpected hypothermia.

A typical visit often ranges from a quick thirty-minute stop to simply admire the scenic landscape, to a couple of hours spent enjoying a relaxing picnic right next to the soothingly flowing mountain water.
