- Haeju is a strategic port, meaning military presence is highly visible; strictly follow your guides' instructions on where you can look and photograph.
- Tours often include the nearby Sokdamgugok (Nine Valleys of Pools and Rocks) to showcase the region's natural beauty rather than just the city center.
- The city serves as a base for visiting the Mount Suyang area; bring comfortable shoes for nature walks.
- Electricity can be intermittent in provincial hotels; keep your devices and power banks fully charged whenever the power is on.

Haeju, the capital of South Hwanghae province, is an important port city in southwestern North Korea. Its location near the west coast and in one of the country's most fertile regions makes it a major center for agriculture and fishing. The port of Haeju is strategically important as it is one of the few in the west of the country that remains largely ice-free in winter. The city is also an industrial center with cement and chemical processing plants. Haeju has a rich history dating back to the Three Kingdoms period, and some historical sites have been preserved, including a stone pagoda from the Goryeo period. The city is also known as the possible birthplace of the first Korean president, Syngman Rhee, although this is not mentioned in official North Korean historiography.
