W National Park (Niger)

Weather…

W National Park is one of West Africa's most significant protected areas, spanning across Niger, Benin, and Burkina Faso. It owes its name to a prominent meander of the Niger River that resembles the letter 'W' from above. The park is a sanctuary for endangered species such as African elephants, lions, leopards, and the rare West African giraffe. Bird enthusiasts will also find it rewarding, with over 350 recorded species. The landscape is a diverse mix of savannah, scrubland, and dense gallery forests along the waterways. During the dry season, animals congregate at the remaining water holes, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. Guided safaris in 4x4 vehicles are available, and boat tours on the Niger River are an unforgettable experience. Accommodations on the edge of the park often serve local dishes based on fish from the Niger, rice, and spicy sauces. The hospitality of the local people and the tranquility of untouched nature make for an intense African experience. The park is best reached from Niamey by car. The convenient time to visit is the late dry season from February to May, when vegetation is less dense and animals are easier to spot. Please check current security advisories before traveling.
