Filingué is a tradition-rich town in the Tillabéri Region of southwestern Niger, located about 180 kilometers northeast of the capital, Niamey. The town is situated in the fertile Dallol Bosso, a fossil river valley renowned for its relatively high soil moisture and agricultural productivity. Filingué serves as the administrative center for its namesake department and acts as a vital link for trade between the capital and the northern pastoral zones. Historically a stronghold for the Zarma people, the town now hosts an ethnically diverse population, including Hausa and Tuareg communities. The economy is primarily based on farming, especially the cultivation of millet and sorghum, complemented by a significant local livestock market. The town's architecture features a mix of traditional mud-brick structures and more modern administrative buildings. Due to its position at the edge of a plateau, Filingué gives striking views of the surrounding Sahelian landscape. The town faces challenges from increasing aridity but benefits from its strategic location along regional trade routes. Filingué continues to be a cultural anchor and an essential service hub for the rural population in the eastern Tillabéri Region.
