Tillabéri is the capital of the region of the same name in western Niger, located approximately 110 kilometers northwest of the national capital, Niamey, on the banks of the Niger River. The city serves as a strategic administrative center for an area bordering Mali and Burkina Faso, which is of great geopolitical significance. Geographically, Tillabéri benefits from its proximity to the river, enabling large-scale rice cultivation in irrigated polders, for which the region is nationwide famous. Historically, the region was a heartland of the Songhai Empire and continues to preserve many cultural traditions of this ethnic group. In addition to rice farming, fishing and livestock trade are vital pillars of the local economy. The city features a well-developed infrastructure, including regional government offices, schools, and medical facilities that serve the surrounding rural areas.
