The Dom Tower in Utrecht is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, standing at a height of 112.32 meters, and is the city's most prominent landmark. Built between 1321 and 1382 in the Gothic style, it was originally part of St. Martin's Cathedral. A devastating tornado in 1674 destroyed the nave of the church, permanently separating the tower from the choir, leaving it as a free-standing structure today. To reach the top, visitors must climb 465 steps, but are rewarded with a panoramic view stretching as far as Amsterdam and Rotterdam on clear days. The tower houses an impressive set of 14 bells weighing a total of over 30,000 kilograms, along with a historical carillon dating back to the 17th century. Extensive restoration work ensures the preservation of the delicate sandstone masonry for future generations. For the people of Utrecht, the 'Dom' is the emotional heart of the city and serves as a navigational point for the entire region. Inside the tower are two chapels, the St. Michael's Chapel and the Egmond Chapel, which are now used for special events. The tower's architecture inspired many other church towers across the country, including the Westertoren in Amsterdam.
