🍽 Food
The island is famous for wild cranberries; try the local cranberry compote, tea, or cakes at village cafes.
During low tide, you can often forage for your own wild oysters along the Wadden Sea dike.
Local restaurants often forage fresh seaweed; look out for seaweed cheese or burgers on menus.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The island's only village street is filled with quaint boutiques, local souvenirs, and bookstores.
Seek out stores on the main street exclusively selling local cranberry jams, wines, and syrups.
Climb to the island's red lighthouse on top of the highest dune in the Wadden Sea for quiet, sweeping views.
Known as the "Sahara of the North," this immense sandy plain provides complete emptiness and silence.

Vlieland is the smallest inhabited Wadden Island in the Netherlands and a sanctuary for those seeking absolute tranquility. Since tourists must leave their cars on the mainland, the island enjoys a uniquely slow-paced atmosphere. The only village, Oost-Vlieland, charms visitors with its historic Dorpstraat lined with listed houses, small cafes, and the iconic lighthouse atop Vuurboetsduin, the highest dune in the Wadden Islands. The landscape of Vlieland is defined by contrasts: to the west lies 'Vliehors', a massive sand desert often called the 'Sahara of the North'. Here, the Vliehors-Express truck takes visitors to the very tip of the island where seals are frequently spotted. In contrast, the eastern part features extensive pine forests, excellent for hiking and cycling away from any traffic noise. The beaches of Vlieland are among the cleanest and widest in the country, offering plenty of space for solitary walks and relaxation. Due to minimal light pollution, Vlieland is one of the best spots in the Netherlands for stargazing at night. Every September, the island hosts the popular 'Into the Great Wide Open' music festival, blending nature and culture in a unique setting. The ferry departs from Harlingen, taking about 1.5 hours (or 45 minutes by fast service). On the island, visitors mostly travel by bike or local bus. The best time to visit is late spring or summer, when the wild roses bloom and the weather is handy for nature excursions.
