💡 Tips

  • Buy a 'Texel e-vignette' online for parking; it covers almost all public parking lots on the island and is cost-effective.
  • Rent a bike! The island has an extensive and excellent network of cycle paths winding through dunes and forests.
  • Book your Ecomare (seal sanctuary) tickets in advance, as it gets extremely crowded during school holidays.
  • The west coast beaches are breezy and excellent for kite surfing, whereas the east coast along the Wadden Sea is calmer.
  • Visit the iconic red lighthouse at the island's northern tip early in the morning for fewer crowds and great photo lighting.

Texel is a true natural paradise and the most visited of the West Frisian Islands. With seven appealing villages, Den Burg being the largest, the island gives a well-suited blend of relaxation and outdoor activities. The west coast consists almost entirely of a broad sandy beach separated from the hinterland by high dunes. The Dunes of Texel National Park covers much of this diverse landscape. A major highlight is Ecomare, a nature center and seal sanctuary where visitors can observe rescued harbor and grey seals up close. At the northern tip of the island stands the iconic red Texel Lighthouse (Eierland); climbing it rewards you with a fantastic view over the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. The 'De Slufter' area is unique, as the sea can flow unhindered into the dunes, creating a specialized salt-tolerant flora. The island is also known for its agriculture, particularly its roughly 17,000 sheep. Texel lamb is considered a delicacy, as is the locally produced sheep cheese. Beer lovers should visit the 'Texelse Bierbrouwerij' to taste the famous 'Skuumkoppe' ale. Texel is a cyclist's dream with over 140 kilometers of well-maintained bike paths through dunes and woods. The ferry departs from Den Helder and takes only about 20 minutes for the crossing. Cars and bicycles are easily transported. Texel is attractive year-round: in summer for swimming, in spring for lambing season, and in autumn and winter for long, brisk walks along the shoreline.
