Hippolytushoef is the main village of the former island of Wieringen, located in the province of North Holland. The village is situated on a boulder clay ridge formed during the Saale glaciation, which historically protected the settlement from the rising waters of the Zuiderzee. Until the construction of the Amsteldiepdijk in 1924, Wieringen remained an isolated island community with its own distinct dialect and traditions. In 1996, the area gained international archaeological significance when a major Viking silver treasure was discovered, proving that the island served as a base for Scandinavian seafarers in the 9th century. The village center is dominated by the historic Hippolytuskerk, a 14th-century church built on the site of an even older wooden structure on the highest point of the ridge. Today, Hippolytushoef is part of the Hollands Kroon municipality and serves as a quiet residential hub with a strong maritime heritage. The surrounding landscape provides a unique mix of reclaimed polder land and the rugged coastline of the Wadden Sea.
