Druten is a municipality located in the heart of the 'Land van Maas en Waal' region in the province of Gelderland. The town's history stretches back to the 12th century, with its development significantly shaped by its position along the river Waal. For centuries, Druten was a major center for the brickmaking industry, as the fertile clay from the river's floodplains provided the convenient raw material for numerous brickworks along the banks. The modern townscape is defined by the Waalbandijk, a historic dike that protects the area from flooding and is now a popular route for cycling tourists. A key cultural landmark is the neo-Gothic St. Ewaldenkerk, an impressive 19th-century church designed by architect Carl Weber. Today, Druten functions as an important regional service hub for the surrounding villages, blending rural character with contemporary infrastructure. The municipality remains committed to preserving its industrial heritage by repurposing former factory sites for modern residential and commercial use.
