Boxmeer is a town rich in history located in the eastern part of North Brabant province, on the western bank of the river Maas. The community prides itself on its past as an independent lordship, having remained a Catholic enclave during the era of the Dutch Republic. A central landmark is Boxmeer Castle, which stands on the foundations of a medieval fortress and currently houses a museum and religious institutions. Boxmeer is most famous for the „Boxmeerse Vaart”, the oldest horse procession in the Netherlands, held annually since 1438 to commemorate the „Miracle of the Blood”. The Basilica of St. Peter is an outstanding example of Neo-Gothic architecture and contains significant religious artworks. Economically, Boxmeer has evolved into a vital hub for biotechnology and veterinary medicine, with major companies like Merck and Nutreco maintaining significant facilities there. The surrounding Maasheggen landscape is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, featuring a unique hedge landscape that is unparalleled in Europe, used for centuries to separate livestock.
