Gulariya is the administrative headquarters of Bardiya District in Lumbini Province, located in southwestern Nepal. The city is situated on the fertile Terai plains, near the Indian border and in close proximity to Bardiya National Park, one of Nepal's premier conservation areas for tigers and greater one-horned rhinoceroses. Historically, the region was part of the Terai belt returned to Nepal following the Anglo-Nepalese War. Gulariya's economy is deeply rooted in agriculture, particularly the cultivation of rice, wheat, and maize, alongside trade in forest products. The Babai River flows nearby, providing essential irrigation for the surrounding farmlands. Gulariya serves as a critical transit and commercial hub for the southwestern part of the country. The local culture is a unique blend of indigenous Tharu traditions and influences from adjacent Indian states, visible in the language, festivals, and culinary practices.
