Karnali River (Nepal)

Weather…

The Karnali River is the longest river in Nepal, stretching 507 kilometers within the country's borders, and is a major perennial tributary of the Ganges. Originating on the Tibetan Plateau near Mount Kailash, it cuts through the Himalayas in deep, narrow gorges before emerging into the plains of the Terai. The river is renowned for its pristine wilderness and is widely considered one of the top destinations in the world for white-water rafting and kayaking. Ecologically, the Karnali is highly significant as it provides a sanctuary for the endangered Gangetic dolphin and the rare gharial and mugger crocodiles. The surrounding basin remains one of the most remote and least developed regions in Nepal, hosting the Bardia National Park along its western banks. Historically, the area was the seat of the powerful Khasa Kingdom, which flourished between the 11th and 14th centuries. Despite various proposals for large-scale hydroelectric projects, the Karnali remains one of Nepal's last free-flowing rivers, representing a critical focus for environmental conservation.
