Geographically, the valley lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna Massif, resulting in a dry, desert-like landscape with spectacular rock formations. The region is renowned for its high mountain passes, notably Thorong La (5,416m), and Tilicho Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world. The people of Manang are traditionally known as skilled traders who historically facilitated commerce between Nepal and Tibet. Culturally, the valley is dominated by Tibetan Buddhism, with ancient monasteries like Braga Gompa, prayer wheels, and chortens dotting the landscape. At an elevation of approximately 3,500 meters in the main village, the valley is a critical stop for acclimatization. Agriculture is limited by the climate to hardy crops like barley, buckwheat, and potatoes, supplemented by yak husbandry.
