Rehoboth is a historic town in the Hardap Region, located approximately 90 kilometers south of Windhoek. It is primarily known as the home of the Baster community, a group of descendants of Cape Dutch settlers and indigenous Khoisan people who migrated here from the Cape Colony in 1870. The town has a unique political tradition based on the 'Vaderlike Wette' (Parental Laws), which governed the self-administration of the Basters. Rehoboth is situated on the banks of the Oanob River and is famous for its thermal springs, which have been used for medicinal purposes since the 19th century. The town's economy is closely linked to agriculture and small-scale businesses, with many residents commuting to the capital for work. The nearby Oanob Dam now serves as a significant recreational area and water reservoir for the region. The settlement maintains a strong cultural identity reflected in its architecture and local customs.
