Khomas Mountains

The Khomas Mountains, often centered around the Auas Range, constitute the highest mountain group in central Namibia, looming over the capital city of Windhoek. The highest peak, Moltkeblick, reaches an impressive altitude of 2484 meters above sea level, making it one of the tallest points in the country. Geologically part of the Damara Belt, the range consists primarily of resistant quartzites and schists, which create a jagged and rugged topography. These mountains play a critical role in the regional microclimate by inducing orographic rainfall during the summer months, which is vital for recharging local aquifers. The vegetation is characterized by highland savanna, featuring acacia trees and wild figs that provide habitat for wildlife such as chacma baboons and klipspringers. Historically, the range served as a natural defensive barrier and a strategic lookout for various indigenous groups. Today, the mountain slopes are a popular recreational escape for Windhoek residents, offering challenging hiking trails and world-class mountain biking routes with panoramic vistas across the Khomas Hochland.
