💡 Tips
- Aranos is located right on the edge of the Kalahari; a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended if you want to drive on the surrounding sandy farm roads.
- The town sits on the banks of the normally dry Nossob River; it's fascinating to see how the community thrives due to artesian wells.
- The best lighting for landscape photos is during the 'golden hour' in the late afternoon, when the red sand dunes glow intensely.
- Nights in the Kalahari can get extremely cold, especially during the winter months (June to August); bring warm clothing and sleeping gear.
- Since accommodation and dining options are very limited, you should book your guesthouse or campsite at a nearby farm in advance.
🍽 Food
The region is famous for sheep farming; ask at the local guesthouses for dishes made with this high-quality lamb.
Often served as steaks or traditional stews in the kitchens of the surrounding guest farms.
A traditional South African and Namibian sausage that is a must-have if you participate in a local braai (barbecue).
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
You cannot buy it in shops, but it is a wonderful, free souvenir if you collect it carefully at the edge of the dunes.
Some local butchers or farms sell excellent quality meat for travelers with their own cooling equipment.
An incredibly peaceful place to take a walk and tune into the silence of the desert.
Drive just a short distance outside the town to find an absolutely quiet spot amidst the gently rolling dunes.

Aranos is a town located in southeastern Namibia within the Hardap Region, near the border with Botswana. It is situated in the Kalahari Basin, surrounded by the characteristic red sands and linear dunes of this semi-desert region. The settlement was originally founded in 1923 as 'Arahoab' and was later renamed Aranos in 1938, a portmanteau derived from Arahoab and Nossob, the nearby ephemeral river. Aranos is the economic hub of an extensive agricultural district where sheep and cattle farming are the primary livelihoods. The settlement was officially proclaimed a town in 2010, reflecting its growing importance for infrastructure and administration in this remote part of the country. Despite the arid environment, the extraction of groundwater from the Nossob Basin supports the resident population and sustained agricultural activities.
