Kalkrand
Kalkrand is a small settlement located on the important B1 national road, halfway between Windhoek and Keetmanshoop. Although the town itself is modest, it serves as a vital starting point for travelers wishing to explore the Kalahari Desert. The landscape here is defined by characteristic red sand dunes and thorn bush savanna. In the immediate vicinity, several renowned lodges offer guided safaris and hikes to observe the region's adapted wildlife. Historically, Kalkrand was an important stop for the railway, which provided the foundation for the settlement's existence. Today, it is primarily a place to refuel and prepare for further travel into more remote areas. Local dining is limited to roadside stops, which are nevertheless famous for their typical Namibian biltong. Travel by car via the paved B1 highway is very easy. The best time to visit is from April to June, when the desert takes on a delicate green hue after the rains and temperatures are pleasant.
