Katutura State Hospital (Namibia)

Weather…

The Katutura State Hospital in Windhoek is one of the two state-run hospitals in the city. It was built in the 1970s during the South African apartheid era. The hospital was specifically constructed for Namibia's black population in the Katutura township, as part of the policy of racial segregation. The name 'Katutura' means 'The place where we do not want to live' in the Herero language. After Namibia's independence in 1990, the hospital became accessible to all Namibians and grew into a major public health institution. It is a large hospital that provides a wide range of medical services and also serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Namibia's School of Medicine. The building itself is a large, functional complex that reflects the complex social and political history of Windhoek.
