Sanderburg (Namibia)

Weather…

Sanderburg is the smallest and youngest of the three famous castles in Windhoek. It was constructed between 1917 and 1919 by the architect Wilhelm Sander as his own private residence. Unlike the larger Schwerinsburg and Heinitzburg, Sanderburg is notable for its more compact proportions and a residential interpretation of the medieval castle style. The architecture also employs massive natural stone and features characteristic battlements and a small tower, giving it the appearance of a fortified manor house. Wilhelm Sander, who shaped Windhoek's urban landscape with numerous designs, used this project to realize his personal vision of a convenient home. The building remains in private ownership and is therefore not open to the public, although it can be easily viewed from the street. Along with the other castles, it is a protected national monument, representing the architectural creativity and heritage of the German colonial era in Namibia at the dawn of a new political age.
