Duwisib Castle (Namibia)

Weather…

Duwisib Castle is an unusual historical structure on the edge of the Namib Desert, approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Maltahöhe. It was built in 1908 by German officer Baron Hansheinrich von Wolf for his American wife, Jayta. The Baron wanted to bring a piece of his homeland to the African savanna and commissioned architect Wilhelm Sander to design a fortress in the historicist style. The castle was constructed using local red sandstone, while nearly all the interior furnishings and building materials such as iron, glass, and wood were imported from Germany and transported by ox cart from the coast. The fortress features 22 rooms, an interior courtyard, and prominent battlements. Following the Baron's death in World War I, the castle fell into disrepair for a time before being restored by the Namibian state. Today it serves as a museum and hotel and is famous for the legend of the Duwisib wild horses, which are said to be descended from the Baron's animals.
