Gibeon is a historic settlement in the Hardap Region of southern Namibia, located about 160 kilometers north of Keetmanshoop. The town is deeply linked to the history of the Witbooi Nama people, who settled here in the 19th century under the leadership of Kido Witbooi. Internationally, Gibeon is renowned for the Gibeon Meteorite field, the largest known meteorite strewn field on Earth, where numerous iron meteorites were discovered during the 19th century. The landscape surrounding Gibeon is extremely arid and dominated by rocky plains that support only sparse vegetation. During the colonial era, Gibeon was the site of significant conflicts between Nama fighters led by Hendrik Witbooi and German colonial forces. Today, Gibeon serves as the administrative center for its namesake constituency and stands as an important site for preserving the cultural heritage of the Nama people.
